The Network Engineer/Data Communication Specialist 1/2 position plays a vital role in ensuring the success of Telecommunication/Network services to provide the services to the State of Alaska and we offer a diverse training platform in many areas in support of your career goals, in addition to the direct training plan associated with this position for flex-promotion opportunity.

The working environment you can expect: Daily work consists of planning, implementing, and maintaining complex converged telecommunications and central site build-outs of data, voice and video networks. On occasion, those project hours take longer than a standard workweek and we offer a flextime plan as a secondary leave resource for use, according to the bargaining unit contract outline.

Who we are looking for: We’re on the hunt for a Network Engineer who embodies the following competencies—essential for our Network/Telecommunication Team’s triumph:

Special Note: Employment with the Office of Information Technology is contingent upon successfully completing and maintaining an Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) background check and security clearance conducted by the Department of Public Safety. Fingerprinting is required (per SOA ISP-131).
Valid driver's license is desired.

Minimum Qualifications
Data Communications Specialist 1
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:
Configuration Management: Knowledge of the principles and methods for planning or managing the implementation, update, or integration of information systems components. - Learning: Uses efficient learning techniques to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills; uses training, feedback, or other opportunities for self-learning and development
- Network Management: Knowledge of the operation, management, and maintenance of network and telecommunication systems and linked systems and peripherals.
- Technical Problem Solving: Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and identifies system malfunctions to determine the source and cause of the problem.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Training in computer science, information technology, computer engineering, or a similar field or experience in monitoring networks, documenting network problems, and providing technical support to network users.
Special Note: “Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.
“Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.
“Training” and “education” in this guidance are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.
Data Communications Specialist 2 Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:
- Configuration Management: Knowledge of the principles and methods for planning or managing the implementation, update, or integration of information systems components.
- Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software.
- Network Management: Knowledge of the operation, management, and maintenance of network and telecommunication systems and linked systems and peripherals.
- Technical Problem Solving: Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and identifies system malfunctions to determine the source and cause of the problem.
- Telecommunications: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of transmissions, broadcasting, switching, control, construction, or operation of telecommunications systems.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Training in computer science, information technology, computer engineering, or a similar field and professional experience supporting and maintaining networks, and installing routers, switches, firewalls, and network-related software.
Special Note: “Competencies” means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation.
“Typically gained by” means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.

Special Note: - Interview questions will be technical in nature and are accompanied by an assessment exercise which (both) will be used to determine knowledge/skills/abilities as it relates to the position.
- Candidates must be able to share in team rotation of 24x7x365 Coordinator 1 dispatch role.
APSIN CLEARANCE Due to the nature of the work of the Office of Information Technology and access to Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) at the workplace, the individual who is selected for this position will be required to pass a background investigation and may be re-fingerprinted. Full disclosure of ALL past criminal convictions (both misdemeanor and felony including suspended impositions of sentence) at the time of application is required. Convictions may lead to disqualification due to the requirements necessary to access these systems.
Employment with the Office of Information Technology is contingent upon successfully completing and maintaining an APSIN background check and security clearance conducted by the Department of Public Safety. Fingerprinting is required.
