CA Institute on Law, Neuroscience, and Education

Class 2051 or 2052 / Exempt / Full-Time / Benefited / Contract / Hybrid-eligible (2 days in office)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $80,000 - $95,000

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Law SF is home to a top-ranked health law program, which is supported by the UCSF/UC Law SF Consortium on Law, Science & Health Policy (“Consortium”), an inter-professional initiative of UCSF and UC Law SF. At UC Law SF, the Consortium houses the CA Institute on Law, Neuroscience and Education. This institute aims to disrupt the school to prison pipeline in California by addressing literacy outcomes in school settings through a collaborative multistakeholder and multidisciplinary approach.

THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

The (Senior) Researcher will assist current Principal Investigators (PIs) and faculty in designing, organizing , and conducting legal and policy research and analysis and will contribute to publications. Prospectively, the incumbent will assume autonomous research responsibility as a PI for independent research projects.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with excellent communication and interpersonal skills; have a desire to learn; and be able to prioritize assignments and produce effective work efficiently. The position requires being comfortable working in an interdisciplinary environment--both independently and as part of a team--and have the organizational skills and judgment necessary to anticipate and initiate tasks across programs, establish priorities, and meet multiple deadlines while managing communications and maintaining schedules. The candidate must also be able to conduct research independently while being an integral part of developing and sustaining a highly collaborative UCLA/UCSF/UC Law interdisciplinary and multi-campus team. This position reports to the Executive Director of the CA Institute on the UC Law campus and is expected to work with faculty, fellows, research assistants, and affiliated faculty.

Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting legal, empirical and/or policy research and analysis
  • Drafting, editing, and tracking research publications, including but not limited to white papers, academic publications, law reviews, blog posts, website updates, and presentations
  • Participating in CA Institute meetings, other external meetings, as needed, as a representative of the CA Institute.
  • Collaborating with other PIs on design and execution of further research proposals. Identify opportunities for new research at the intersection of juvenile justice, neuroscience, disability rights, education and health equity
  • Networking and relationship building with key partners in the fields of juvenile justice, neuroscience, disability rights, education and health equity
  • Assisting with the development of grant proposals for funding from external funders
  • Working as part of the CA Institute team to clearly and concisely explain research findings to stakeholders and policymakers to identify opportunities for disruption of the school-to-prison pipeline
  • Assisting faculty in management and organization of research, including meeting scheduling with research partners such as judicial and detention institutions in California, as well as with stakeholders, community organizations, family organizations, and advocates
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • JD required
  • An additional MPH, MPP, PhD, or MA in a related field is strongly preferred
  • At least 2 years of experience in rigorous empirical research (quantitative and/or qualitative)
  • Preference for a candidate with a demonstrated track record as a PI or co-PI

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • De monstrated research experience and interest in juvenile justice, health policy, literacy, criminal justice reform, and/or behavioral science
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills, with high attention to detail, accuracy, and presentation quality; able to tailor communications to a wide range of audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, and collaborative spirit, including the ability to communicate with all CA Institute stakeholders positively and sensitively
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as a team player
  • Ability to be proactive, creative, and results-oriented
  • Previous experience working with underserved and vulnerable populations
  • Excellent independent legal research and writing skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with Canva, Zotero and other research applications preferred, but not necessary
